West Ham United have suffered a huge blow in their quest to qualify for the Champions League after Leicester City secured a big win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
West Ham United had missed out on the chance to close the gap on Leicester City in the Champions League race following the disappointing home loss to Merseyside giants Everton. The Hammers lost 1-0 to the Toffees thanks to the first half strike fromEngland international Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Calvert-Lewin took his tally to 16 goals in the Premier League with his goal against West Ham United.
West Ham United missed out on a fantastic opportunity to move within two points of Leicester City but the defeat meant they stayed five points off the Foxes at the end of the weekend’s set of games in the Premier League.
Leicester City have since moved eight points clear of the Hammers with the 2-1 away win over Manchester United.The hosts trailed to an early goal from Leicester City left-back Luke Thomas off the assist from Belgian international Youri Tielemans. Mason Greenwood levelled proceedings for the Red Devils as the two teams settled for a goal apiece at the break.
The Foxes went on to score the winning goal of the match in the second half via the header from Turkish international Caglar Soyuncu off a Marc Albrighton corner kick. With the win for Leicester City, the Hammers’ Champions League football quest is on the verge of collapse. West Ham United must win their remaining three games and hope Leicester City lose their last two games to have a realistic chance of playing Champions League football in the new season.
